Trim & Casing Tips

MATERIAL CHOICES THAT PREVENT HEADACHES

Bathrooms / damp basements: Avoid standard MDF. It swells fast if it gets wet.
Best moisture-resistant options: PVC trim, primed finger-joint, or good exterior-rated paint-grade material.
Stain-grade work: Use stable woods (and seal all sides). Wood moves—plan for it.
Paint-grade: Finger-joint pine or similar is usually the best mix of straight + stable + easy to fill.

ADHESIVES THAT ACTUALLY HELP

Trim-to-wall: A small, consistent bead of construction adhesive reduces movement and nail pops.
Miter joints: Use wood glue (paint-grade) and clamp/pin until set. Glue is stronger than nails here.
Inside corners for base: A tiny glue line can help stop seasonal “clicking” and opening.
Don’t overdo adhesive: Too much = squeeze-out, messy paint, and future removal becomes a disaster.

NAILS, GAUGES, AND WHERE TO PLACE THEM

Casing: 15/16ga into framing is common. Add a few 18ga where you need finesse.
Baseboard: 15/16ga into studs; 18ga for delicate top edges or when you’re close to a finished surface.
Crown / big profiles: Aim for framing whenever possible; adhesive helps, but structure is king.
Nail placement rule: Nails near edges can split trim. Stay back slightly and pre-drill if the profile is delicate.

SCREWS... WHEN THEY'RE WORTH IT

Use screws when: Something is pulling away, warped framing, heavy profiles, or a problem area that will move.
Best practice: Pre-drill, countersink lightly, then fill properly.
Avoid drywall screws: Brittle and prone to snapping; they’re not trim fasteners.

CALK AND FILLER: DO IT IN THE RIGHT ORDER

Wood filler is for holes and dents.
Caulk is for gaps at transitions (trim-to-wall, trim-to-jamb, etc.).
Don’t caulk raw dusty surfaces: It’ll fail early. Clean the joint, then caulk.
Less is more: A thin, clean bead beats a thick messy one every time.

HOW TO GET TIGHTER MITERS

Make sure your saw is actually square. One tiny error becomes a visible gap.
Cut two test miters before production if the room is “high visibility.”
Miter glue + pin nail (or clamp) is the easiest upgrade to “looks like a finish carpenter did it.”
Don’t force a miter closed with nails alone: It’ll open later.

COPING INSIDE CORNERS (BASE & CROWN)

Coping wins long-term because the joint hides seasonal movement better than a miter.
Quick coping tip: Slight back-cut helps the face stay tight.
Don’t fight bad drywall: If the corner is brutal, scribe or adjust the cut instead of “pushing harder.”

SHIMS AND REVEALS THAT LOOK PRO

Shim behind casing where framing is low so the face stays flat and consistent.
Consistent reveal = clean look. Inconsistent reveal screams “rushed.”
Don’t chase perfect in a crooked house: Chase consistent.

DOORS: THE COMMON MISTAKES

Don’t trim first, then discover the door rubs. Fix the swing and gaps before final casing.
Nail into solid backing whenever possible around door legs and head.
Watch the hinge-side: That’s where seasonal issues show up first.
